APHRO-ISM Online Book Group

This book group will dive into APHRO-ISM: Essays on Pop Culture, Feminism, and Black Veganism from Two Sisters by Aph Ko and Syl Ko.

The group meets each Sunday in September (5, 12, 19, 26), from 12-2pm (EDT) and will be facilitated by Will Daddario, PhD.

Why this book?

If you follow progressive social and political causes, then you likely hear a lot about the need to decenter Whiteness and delve into the complexity of intersectional identity issues. Of the many articles and books I’ve read on these topics in the last several years, this is the first book to fulfill this particular call to action.

Compiled from several blog posts, the book presents a barrage of concise arguments, directed primarily to black people, about the need to stop solving white people’s problems, the extreme importance of the “animal issue” in topics of racism, and the urgency of rooting out faux-progressive concepts from contemporary ideological apparatuses that ostensibly side with anti-racist activism but actually reinstate the (white supremacist) status quo.

Why read this book with me?

I’m a white, heterosexual, male. Ok, yes, that’s true. At the same time, I have practiced doing my whiteness otherwise for over 15 years. I am a dynamic thinker and compassionate facilitator who thrives on complex conversations and difficult topics. One example is my self-paced online course Race & Philosophy.

My academic and scholarly work is supported at every step by my grief work and ongoing struggles as a grieving parent and child. This book group will be a collaborative endeavor to work through all the ideas that astonish us and leave us at a loss for words. But then we’ll keep working to find words with which to aspire to the conceptual paradigm shifts urged by Ash Ko and Syl Ko.
