Doula Training: Supporting Perinatal Loss - April 2023

Joanne Zerdy, PhD will be teaching Supporting Perinatal Loss in collaboration with a Birth Doula Training facilitated by Chama Woydak and Homegrown Families. However, folks are welcome to sign up for this training as a stand-alone course.

This ONLINE Loss Training will meet from 9am-5pm EDT on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

We will discuss: different forms of perinatal loss, perinatal loss disparities based on race and ethnicity, the impact of the COVID crisis, including preferences for care after death on a Birth Plan, pregnancy after loss, how to offer grief support, healing practices for bereaved parents/families, and practicing self-care as a doula.

Participants will read 3 short case studies prior to the training to prepare for small-group conversations. To receive a Certificate of Completion, they will be asked to complete a Reflection Assignment (which could be a typed paper or audio or video recording).

Through large- and small-group conversations, we will delve into this important area of perinatal physical-mental-emotional health so that you feel more confident, skilled, and prepared to support those who experience these profound losses.

We will also be joined by bereaved mother and founder of Stillborn and Infant Loss Support (SAILS), Sadija A. Smiley. Sadija will talk about her personal journey through grief and loss as well as her work supporting families through SAILS.

Testimonials from Joanne’s September 2022 Training:
”I left our training time together feeling hopeful and like this was the right path for me to take. I plan on beginning a life/career shift to begin working to support postpartum people and families grieving any loss and major life transition as a new family unit. I feel like I have an excellent foundation to do so because of this class. I left the class inspired to continue learning. Joanne's warmth and compassion were noticeable from the beginning. She was accessible and easy to understand with relevant resources, topics, and suggestions. I couldn't recommend this training enough.”

“I fully enjoyed this training. I appreciate the diversity of the attendees, especially the inclusion of needs and resources for BIPOC pregnant and newly parenting people.”

“This course prepared me that perinatal loss can be open for conversation and help others heal through a compromising life event.”
